Wk 1 _ChidiOkocha_“We're Still Storming"
I am trying to find out which of Tuckman’s Stages or Phases Bistro12 team is in and use that to determine which LEADERSHIP STYLE is appropriate for the Project managers and Program Manager to be using. I have done this assessment using the Tuckman's model. The tool deployed involved answering a questionnaire of 32 questions. The scoring was done by summing up the answers in different categories to determine which stage of team development had the highest score.
Outcome of Team Assessment
Based on the scoring sheet totals on the Tuckman's four phases, I arrived at the following results
- Forming Stage-total scores : 27
- Storming Stage-total scores : 29
- Norming Stage-total scores : 20
- Performing Stage-total scores : 28
As revealed in the results, the Storming Stage has the highest score. This outcome implies that Bistro12 Team has transited from the initial stage of Forming. The following characteristics and behaviours are typical of the Storming stage:
- Initial resistance to tasks given
- Opposition to quality improvement ideas initiated by other team members
- Irregularities in attitude about the chances of success for the team
- Consistent argument between members on approaches to adopt
- Team competition
- Questioning the rationale behind choice projects and assignments
- Over promising on deliverables
- Lack of unity
What leadership should the Project and Program Managers adopt?
If the Storming stage is characterized by disagreements and conflict, it follows that a strong leadership skill will be extremely useful at this stage.
The main role of the leader during the storming stage is to coach team members and guide them toward team unity and convergence of goals. This style of leadership agrees with Hersey and Blanchard's "selling" style.
Conclusion
It is my conclusion that Bistro12 Team is now at the Storming phase of team development as shown by the assessment result. A coach or selling style of leadership is the most appropriate style to be used by Program and Project Managers.

Hi Chidi,
ReplyDeleteOK, not a bad start for your first posting. You did an excellent job citing your references using APA format, BUT.....
Why didn't you follow our step by step process as shown in Engineering Economy, page 7, figure 1-1? It is really important that you start to master this step by step process, as it will help you with your paper as well as help you prepare for the narrative portion of your EVP, CEP, PSP or DMRM credentials.
Keep up the good work but next posting be sure to follow the 7 step process.
For your W2 blog posting, you are free to pick the topic of your choice and if you are working smart and not hard, your blog topic will support your paper.
