W6_Stella_Traffic Congestion, Selecting the best RCA tool using Multiattribute Decision

W6_Stella_Traffic Congestion, selecting the best RCA tool using Multiattribute Decision

December 19, 2012

1. Problem Definition and Recognition

Having applied the three major RCA tool in getting to the root cause of traffic congestion in Lagos, The need to make decision for the best tool that will be suitable to getting to the solutions of this problem arises, hence  the application of the multiattribute Decision making tool.

Multiple attribute decision making (MADM) procedures, is a process for making preference decisions over the available alternatives which are characterized by multiple (usually conflicting) attributes are useful for improving decision making in a wide range of circumstances--from professional to managerial to political.

Non Compensatory models have four items for making a choice when multiple attributes are present. They are

i.              Dominance

ii.             Satisficing

iii.            Disjunctive Resolution

iv.           Lexicography

From the root causes observed from the three RCA done in the previous weeks, a ‘RCA selection problem’ is formed as shown in the table 1 below.

 2. Feasible Alternatives.

Lexicography is one of the models under non compensatory models. It is suitable when one attribute is seen to be more important than the other attributes.

Ordinal Ranking of root causes gotten from the three RCA

Tab.2

A.   Result of paired comparison

Corruption > Bribery

Corruption >poor construction

Poor construction >narrow road

Corruption >lack of maintenance

Poor construction >lack of maintenance

          Bribery >poor construction

Narrow road > lack of maintenance

Corruption >Greed

Corruption >narrow road

Bribery >narrow road

Bribery >lack of Maintenance

Poor construction >lack of maintenance

Greed > poor construction

Attribute                          Number of times on the left of > (=Ordinal ranking)

Corruption                                      5

Poor construction                            3

Bribery                                           3

Greed                                             1

Narrow road                                    1

Corruption has the highest number of rank. Rank 5 is the most important issue to handle.

From fig. 1, the RCA that has the ‘high’ grade of Attribute is the PTA,

Therefore the PTA is the best tool for this case study.

3.    Develop the outcomes for each alternative

Form the above Rank 5 is the most important issue to handle.

Selection is based on the highest ranked attribute according to Lexicography model.

From Tab. 1, the RCA tool that has the ‘high’ grade of Attribute is the PTA,

Therefore the PTA is the best tool for this case study.

4.    Selection of Criteria

The use of Lexicography model was adopted in Tab. 2 to get to the highest ranked attribute (resulting to PTA selection).

Similarly from tab. 1, checking for Dominance , PTA dominated all.

So the application of Dominance and Lexicography models gave me the same results.

5.    Analysis and comparison of the alternatives

Lexicography model gave me the best alternative because the attributes were ranked in order of importance.

6. Select the preferred alternative

As already explained above the PTA has the highest ranked value and dominated all the other alternatives, so it is the preferred alternative for this case study.

 7. Performance Monitoring & Post Evaluation of Result

The application of Lexicography and Dominance model is a really a good performance monitoring tool in the sense that they ranked all the alternatives in their order of importance.

  1. Awesome, Stella!!! Be sure to experiment with the COMPENSATORY models as well.

What you will find is while Lexicography and Dominance gave you the rank order, what those models DON'T show you is the RELATIVE difference.

How MUCH more important is corruption to poor construction? Is it twice as important? 4 times as important? 10 times? Only the compensatory models will give you that kind of ranking.

Keep up the good work but I really need to start seeing the next draft of your paper....... Try to get that done before the start of the New Year......
