W1_MaryKentebe_Tuckman's Analysis Assignment

Issues/Challenges
To determine the phase our team (Bistro 12) is currently in, using the Tuckman phase’s model and to further determine which leadership style is most appropriate for the team’s purpose/ goal. The primary goal of the team being to pass the AACE certification exams. The secondary goal which is an addendum to this is to also have a return on investment for our various sponsors. Dr. Bruce Tuckman presents a model which identified the stages that teams move through. The Bruce Tuckman model uses 5 developmental stages, being the: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning stages.
Possible Alternatives consider
Various models have been developed for evaluating the operating phase of a teams and its leadership. Some of them are here listed:
·         Tuckman Forming Storming Norming and Performing model
·         Tannenbaum & Schmidt Continuum
·         Hersey & Blanchard's situational leadership model

Outcomes for each alternative
The Tuckman models explain the development of a team through ability, maturity, establishment of relationships and changes in leadership style. These changes in leadership style, progresses from directing, to coaching, participating, finishing, delegation and almost detachment. Going by this model, leadership will be put in a good position to take appropriate action where necessary to assist the team in the achievement of its goal

Comparison of alternatives
Using the Tuckman’s stages of team development and the Hersey and Blanchard model of leadership styles, the team development stage can be seen to determine to a great extent the leadership style appropriate for its phase.
Team development
Leadership style
Forming
Directing
Storming
Coaching
Norming
Supporting
Performing
Delegating
Adjourning
Detachment
Selection Criteria
Using the Tuckman’s model for the evaluation on Bistro 12 team, in answering the 32 questions on the template shown below is the outcome of the analysis:
Forming Phase – 27
Storming Phase – 26
Norming Phase – 23
Performing Phase – 20

 Selection of preferred leadership style
The above result shows that though the Team Bistro 12 is still in the forming stage we are gradually transiting into the storming stage.
Hence there is still a lot of dependency on leadership for guidance and direction and though there is clarity of purpose or goal, the uncertainties still persist.

Selection of Criteria (or Criterion) – (Analysis, Optimization and Evaluation)
I used Tuckman’s Team Work Survey form to carry out the analysis on team Bistro 12 by answering the 32 questions on the template, and arrived at the following results:

Forming Phase – 28
Storming Phase – 27
Norming Phase – 23
Performing Phase – 20

Evaluation of Result

The Bistro 12 team will thrive as the team progress into the norming phase, this will be evident in more team work, and an attitude of pulling each other up encouraging forging on till the goal is achieved, there by having a lot fewer people getting fired along the way.

  1. Hi Mary,
Like several of your colleagues before you, your first posting was OK but not great.

You followed our step by step process fairly well, but you got the feasible alternatives wrong. Are we looking only for the Tuckman Stages or are what we are really looking for is the appropriate leadership style. You got it right in the comparison of the alternatives but you missed it in the feasible alternatives.

Also, your citations are not completely consistent with APA formatting. Go to the OWL@Purdue http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/10/ and you can see the appropriate format is:

Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article. In Title of book or larger document (chapter or section number). Retrieved from http://www.someaddress.com/full/url/

Compare that against how you formatted your references.

I will accept this weeks posting but would like to see improvement on the next one, which is due NLT Monday night. I strongly suggest that you seek out the help and advice from any of your colleagues who got an "AWESOME" analysis from me.
