W3_Stella_Traffic Congestion in Lagos

Feasible Alternatives.

Based on findings from CED, there is an urgent need for the government to embark on congestion reduction strategies so as to free our roads from the effect of traffic jam. Some of these strategies are:

a. Enhanced transport coordination: the various modes of public transport including intermediate public transport have to work in tandem.

b. Road Capacity Expansion: road widening is often advocated as ways to reduce traffic

congestion.

c. Supply and demand: congestion can be reduced by either increasing road capacity (supply) or by reducing traffic (demand).

D.Intelligent transportation system: intelligent transportation systems include the application of a wide range of new technologies, including traffic reporting via radio or possibly mobile phones etc.

e. Encouraging “Green Modes”: any traffic congestion reduction strategy in Lagos should encourage development of “green modes” such as bicycles, cycle rickshaws and pedestrians

(Sanjay, 2003).

f. Drivers’ enlightment: there should be proper and adequate enlightment for the drivers on the dangers inherent in congestion.

 3. Develop the outcomes for each alternative

Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that poor road condition, inadequate road infrastructures, absence of integrated transport system, drivers’ behavior, accident and inadequate traffic planning are the salient factors that are responsible for road traffic congestion in Lagos State, therefore embarking on various strategies such as enhanced transport coordination, road capacity expansion, improved road infrastructures, drivers’ enlightment and application of Intelligent Transport System will drastically reduce the traffic congestion on the road.

4.    Selection of Criteria

The use of CED was the best means to get to the root cause of Traffic congestion in lagos.

5.    Analysis and comparison of the alternatives

Statics has shown that improvement in the alternatives listed above reduce traffic congestion by 70%.

6. Select the preferred alternative

Enhanced transport system and the massive expansion of road would be the preferred alternatives to the solution of this problem.

     7. Performance Monitoring & Post Evaluation of Result

Inventing of various strategies such as enhanced transport coordination team, road capacity expansion monitoring team, drivers’ enlightment program and application of Intelligent Transport System will be the best monitoring process to solving this problem.

  1. EXCELLENT, Stella!!!! Now you are catching on to what I am looking for!! Nice work!

You followed our step by step process perfectly and your citations were spot on!!!

For future postings, I would like to see you actually using the tools and techniques for Step 5. Explained another way, instead of words in that step, I would expect to see some sort of table or chart or graph showing the results of your analysis. Some of the tools and techniques for this type of analysis would be coming from Memory Jogger 2 (i.e. Force Field Analysis) or better yet, Multi-Attribute Decision Making, which you will find in Chapter 14 of your Engineering Economics.

For your W4 posting, I would like to see you take this same case study, but this time demonstrate you understand how to use one or more (preferably 2 or 3) of the different tools/techniques you find in Engineering Economy, Memory Jogger 2 or Humphreys to analyzed the problem and QUANTIFY your solutions. Suggest you consult with Folakemi as she is doing her paper on Logical Framework and your problem fits perfectly with the Log Frame Approach.

Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next posting. (Which should be done shortly as you are behind schedule)
